Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.
Chapter 1
The year is 1873, year of the Industrial Calender.
The age of kings and royal blood lines are over; where once a monarch stood, government reigns. Aristocrats, the wealthy, and the famous rule the lives of the world.
Time in Nova has given way from the Dark Ages to Steam and Industrialism. Magic still exists, but those born to possess the gift-once praised and seen as 'Children of the Creator'-are persecuted and "converted" to the ranks of the Rose Court. The Fairchild name stands behind every major municipal, executive, and commercial group in Nova; its head, Charles Fairchild, bringing it to its current peak influence with his pregnant wife, Rachel at his side. No one questions a Fairchild. Shortly before the birth of their twin children, Charles is approached by an unknown woman who leaves him in the possession of an ancient book, the cover worn and the pages falling from of their bindings, the letters 'Noru' only visible on the cover.
Rachel gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl-Sorein and Cassandra Fairchild. 10 years passed. Charles returned to the book the strange woman had given him. Entreating the head of the Alchemist's Guild with its analysis, he arranged to have it transported under lock and key to the Arch. That night, he was found dead, his arms tightly clenched around the book. Blood pooled the floor with his daughter Cassandra by his side, covered blouse and hands. Sorein, second to the scene, stripped Cassandra of her wealth and inheritance to the family, casting her from the estate without a penny to her name.
12 years after the death of Charles Fairchild, Sorein heads the Fairchild family. During those 12 long years, his influence has magnified the Rose Court many times over in their hunt for magic-users for purification in the Ring. Those who knew the young Aristocrat rumor that Sorein has been corrupted. He is never seen without his father's book and the Fairchild family pendant, which had long rested as an artifact in the estate.
Meanwhile, Cassandra Fairchild is forced to roam the streets of Novria as an outlaw. Gaining rapport with underground factions, her prominence has even brought her the title 'Queen of Thieves'. The rumors of her brother's activity brings no comfort. Aristocrat against thief. Who is the villain and who is the hero? You decide the fate.
